Hi all!
Thanks Heli for already sharing your ideas!

Here some additional information about this task. We have divided this task into three different phases. You can take part in every three or just comment one - your choice.

1. Invent a Free Will slogan that says what the opera is; a way of speaking about it.

2. Design the visual image of Free Will in the form of a poster. Here some already decided elements of Free Will visuals

3. Make a plan for marketing Free Will to the online community.

The opera:

Opera By You means you. You have written the script, composed the music, designed the sets and costumes and all in all planned an opera to be premiered as Free Will in summer 2012. It has been a project unique in the history of the world. Great! To keep the project firmly within the community, and to ensure that the brilliant concept prevails from start to finish, we want to make as little use as possible of hasan & partners, the Savonlinna Opera Festival’s in itself excellent advertising agency. So we are now offering you an opportunity to plan the marketing of Free Will and welcome you to take part.

The mission:

To plan the marketing of Free Will, its operating culture and advertising. The chief media is the net.

a) The primary objective is to sell tickets for the opera’s premiere on July 21, 2012. The tickets cost from €40 to €164, depending on the auditorium section. We want to know how and where you would sell the tickets for Free Will. Who would you market it to, and how would you target them? The main target group will be people the shortest distance away, in the Nordic countries.

b) The opera will be streamed live from Olavinlinna Castle. Immediately after the performance there will be a session at which the operatives and the most active members of the Opera By You community will be interviewed and join in the discussion. The other objective is to get as many viewers and as much international publicity as possible for this event.

‘Must be’ elements:

The Savonlinna Opera Festival logo, find wo versions of it attached.

The name Opera By You – Free Will must tell about the opera and its unique genesis.

Good to know:

Savonlinna is a small town in the eastern part of Finland. It is accessible by air (direct flights), road and rail via the Finnish capital, Helsinki. The town has good accommodation options and excellent restaurants. The Savonlinna Opera Festival is an event of international renown attracting some 60,000 opera fans a year. This is a lot for a Finnish festival. The Savonlinna Opera Festival celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2012. So in addition to Free Will, it will be staging many other operatic hits and unique performances. All the operas at the Savonlinna Opera Festival are performed in the idyllic medieval Olavinlinna Castle.

Doing a Virtual Launch Party

Hola!

Thought I could help out with some marketing ideas. Although I am still in production for my virtual opera, I am working on a Virtual Launch Party. I am putting together about 100 press packs (with DVDs of Libertaria) to give out to 100 venues that will screen the DVD and host their own Virtual Launch Party. I also hope to contact music reviewers and respected members of my field (classical and electroacoustic music), hopefully in the hopes of having some reviews and press this way.

This might be a helpful way to help you launch the opera. I am trying to make this opera open to the masses, per se', so I am opening it up to venues both in academia and more popular venues - festivals, dance clubs, galleries, film clubs, student groups, museums, libraries, indie theaters, private individuals who can host a screening party, etc. Also launching it online.

Planning on doing some merch too, on Zazzle.com, although that is later in the project. It doesn't make much in revenue, but can help bring awareness to the project. Silkscreening is more affordable, if you can set it up. (Used to teach art, so all about DIY). :)

I also write and have publicized the opera through magazines/journals/sites I write for.

BTW, I was asked to write a journal article on my virtual opera, and would love to include input about Opera By You in this article. Won't happen for a little while (probably summer), but if you want to send me a few links with some info, I can help spread the word.

Sounds great! :) If you can send it to my inbox. Now that my opera is rolling through music production, I have a little more time since I am not composing 24/7! Would be great to have a blurb about the event, date, location, etc. (nice and short) so I can blast it through my various channels.

Marketing: Flyers and PENS!!!!

Flyers can be anywhere. A piece of paper to make people curious. People can take them with them from libraries, cafés, hotels, they can be handed to them face to face, they can be mailed (and biggest way to reach the people is the net, twitter, Facebook etc). Jungle drum is the most effective media in the world.
I think we could give away pens with the Opera festival logo and the name Free will at R-kiosks and other places where people bet. Veikkaus is our sponsor and I´m sure do not nothing against this. It´s worth trying. People almost every time take the pen with them at these betting places which are a huge amount of places: gasoline stations, department stores, stores. The veikkaus -pen is red and this could be blue. Worth of thinkin about.

Marketing: Posters

1.)I have added this poster a little bit of humour and it is surely stop to look. The balance is no quite right, but it can easily be fixed (only scissors and paper was hard to handle).
2.) This is a fantasy poster: a couple skating in the summer. I´m still wondering where to put the texts and how big they should be. But this far: I´d like to go to this direction.

Free Will Marketing Planning

This poster is a suggestion. Also for T-shits, stickers etc.
Colours:- Background: red or cyanid or violet Lightning: white or light blue
-Words ´Free` and ´Tahto´ black
-Words ´Vapaa´ and ´Will´ white
-Word ´Opera´ black
-Word ´Savonlinna´ white
There could be also date at the bottom, but at early stage just this information.
Those two pictures of a lightning in the sky are refences to the coulours.
I have also added two very different kind of references: a man and an angel. Just to give something to think about.
I have also added 2 kind of puzzles (these are done by old masters) as an example.
And the last one as an example of ude of colours.

Free Will marketing planning

I think we should aim at big audience (+ million in Finland, people who watch almost everything eg on TV) and and also selective people (about 700 000 max in Finland) who very carefully choose what they wanna see.
Now while in production we should tell media about making the opera: morning TV, magazines, newspapers (local and national), we should also use Facebook and Twitter. We shoot take good photos and create interesting slogans, which create curiosity. At buss stops, magazines and stickers, t-shirts, there could be slogans like:"What do you want?", "Free Will is what you´re gonna get?", separately or combined.
Colours I would use are black, red and white.
I´ll try to draw an example how these colours, the text Free Will and a lightning could be combined.
Press cannot be informed too early. And it is interesting for them and readers/viewers/listeners to follow the process. Could YLE Teema-channel be informed of this? And then of of course closer to the highlight,the premiere, the press should be handed a nice goody back with allkinds of material (T-shirt), maps, etc...and also the artist should be on the covers of magazines and the Wreckamovie-company could also tell about their business (so we could also get publicity in such magazines as Tekniikan Maailma, Hi-Fi etc). P.S And also a big or small scandal would help ;)
